Cactus Fig

The cactus fig is also by its 'dessert fig' name. It's the fruit of the Opuntia cactus. They originally come from Latin America and can also be found in countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. There are fruits in various different colours like yellow, green, red, pinky-red and brown. The fruit has a sweet taste, sometimes a little sour and puts you in mind of a pear. The cactus fig contains juicy, soft flesh with edible seeds. The skin has very small barbed thorns. The fruits are ripe as soon as the green thorned fruits turn yellow to red.
